Cardiometabolic Syndrome

As I have mentioned, the meeting in Boston on the “Cardiometabolic Syndrome“ last Fall attracted 17 different specialties all interested in the definition of the Syndrome and how it relates to their particular specialty in medicine.

Noticeably absent was the American Diabetes Association, the organization who started it all with Jerry Reaven and the concept of Syndrome X.

Although there was agreement that everyone with diabetes 2 had the Metabolic Syndrome (MS) at some time in their life there was no agreement on using the diagnosis to search or monitor patients for early diabetes.

I know how important it is because in my office it has been proven to over 900 patients. MS can be reversed and complications can be reversed as well.

The meeting did begin to discuss ethnic differences in MS occurrence and the sharp relationship to Coronary Heart Disease. No mention of the elevated triglycerides, uric acid, or fatty liver was made.

A unified worldwide definition of the Metabolic Syndrome is yet to come.
